[ARCHIVED] Library Services Now and During Civic Center Construction

The Royal Oak Public Library will be open with full service during the construction that will be happening around it. Parking will be impacted by the large construction sites immediately to the west and east of the library. Some tips for library customers:

Evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays may be times of easier parking access since downtown employees are not using the nearby parking.

Royal Oak Public Library has many electronic resources that can be accessed by smart phones, tablets, and computers with internet access. This includes, books, audio books, magazines, music, movies, and a wide variety of databases and online courses.  These are all free and do not require coming to the library in order to use them. A Royal Oak Public Library card is needed to access these resources. Two classes are currently scheduled for those who would like to familiarize themselves with these digital resources: Monday, May 14 at 7 PM and Wednesday, July 18 at 7 PM. Bring your tablet or smartphone with you to these sessions.

Royal Oak Public Library cards are honored at all the libraries that border Royal Oak (and beyond).  Your ROPL card allows you to borrow books at nearby libraries, place holds to be picked up at many of those nearby libraries, return books to those libraries even if they were checked out at ROPL, etc.  Troy Public Library is not part of our library cooperative and shared catalog, but Troy and Royal Oak have reciprocal arrangements so Royal Oak residents can receive Troy Public Library guest cards that allow them to check out Troy Public Library materials.

Starting in the fall, some library programs will be offered off site so residents can have easier access.  Stay tuned for those via ROPL’s website (ropl.org) and monthly eLeaflet (sign up for this at ropl.org) and Twigs and Leaflet that can be picked up at the library.

Over the Memorial Day Weekend, May 26 to May 28, ROPL’s catalog will be “off-line” while we convert to a new catalog. Because of this massive migration of book and patron records to a new system, MelCat borrowing was suspended on April 1 and is scheduled to resume in July.  MelCat is the statewide interloan system which allows borrowing from libraries all over Michigan including academic libraries.  It is not The Library Network’s interloans where library customers place holds using the shared catalog. Holds can still be placed through TLN’s Enterprise catalog and usually arrive for pick up within a few days (if the items are not already checked out). This system is still in operation and will only be interrupted for the three day migration down time over Memorial Day weekend.  The new catalog system is called CARL and will have a number of new customer friendly features.

Please feel free to contact the library at (248) 246-3700 during its open hours (Mon – Thurs, 10 AM–9 PM, Fri and Sat 10 AM–6 PM, and Sundays during the school year 1 PM – 5 PM.
