[ARCHIVED] Meet Your New Fire Chief

Fire Chief David Cummins

Twenty-five-year Royal Oak Fire Department veteran David Cummins is the department's new fire chief, taking over for retired Chief Chuck Thomas.

“We’re extremely pleased to announce this promotion,” said City Manager Don Johnson, describing Cummins as a person of character and great integrity.

A department lifer, Cummins, 48, was hired shortly after graduating from the University of Michigan – Dearborn.  He served 19 years as a firefighter before being promoted to sergeant and then later to lieutenant where his duties included overseeing the operation of Fire Station #2 at 13 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue.

“Fire service is in my blood,” said Cummins.  His father, Lloyd Cummins, was a firefighter for 31 years in Detroit.

The new chief is committed to providing the highest quality fire protection. He will oversee three fire stations, 56 firefighters and a $13 million budget. The department makes approximately 6,000 runs annually.

“It’s an incredible honor to lead what I consider to be one of the best departments in Oakland County,” Cummins said.

Assistant Fire Chief Jim Cook, who acted as interim fire chief following the departure of Thomas in June 2016, praised Cummins and recommended him for the top job.

“I consider him the most qualified candidate for the position of chief,” Cook said. “I’m very excited to work him in his new role.”

Cummins and his wife Dawn have two children – Evan, 18, and Vanessa, 15. In his spare time he enjoys hunting, fishing and sports.
