[ARCHIVED] Heat Wave Alert

Fan

Extreme temps are expected all week. In Royal Oak, the Royal Oak Public Library (222 E 11 Mile Road), Senior Center (3500 Marais Ave), and Salter Center (1545 E Lincoln Ave) are all available to the public to cool off during normal business hours. Additionally, Oakland County has a list of nearby cooling centers.

Tips for staying Cool

  • Stay indoors (ideally in an air-conditioned environment)
  • If your cooling plan includes using a fan, remember that fans are effective only if indoor temperatures are less than 90°F. With indoor temperatures above 90°F, a fan can increase body temperature.
  • Drink plenty of water. You’ll need to replace the moisture that you’re losing when you sweat. If you’re caring for an older loved one, encourage them to drink more in the heat, especially if they’re perspiring.
  • Dress for the heat. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Natural fibers like cotton or linen are best.
  • Rest. Avoid strenuous activities.
  • Soak. Take a cool shower or bath to help you cool down.
  • Know the signs of heat illness and be watchful for symptoms both for you and anyone you might be caring for. Learn the signs.

Tips for Managing Energy Use

  • Shade your home – close curtains and shades on sun-facing windows to keep the heat out and your home cool and comfortable.
  • Use a fan – fans help keep people cool, not rooms. Be sure to turn them off when you leave to help save energy.
  • Use your appliances in the evening – postpone doing laundry or dishwashing until later in the day once outdoor temperatures begin to cool to avoid adding heat to your home.
  • Raise your thermostat to 78 degrees and keep your air conditioning system free of leaves and debris to help reduce cooling costs.
