On two separate occasions this summer, I was riding my bicycle on Washington and Main St (around 11 mile). I was in the street - as bikes are required to do - going a respectable speed and right on top of the bike "sharrow" when I was aggressively honked and yelled at by cars! In Royal Oak?! I couldn't believe it!
Of course I pointed out the "sharrow" and yelled back at them "Share the road!", but that got me thinking... these drivers must not know the rules. We have very visible signs instructing bikes to walk on the sidewalk... But where are the signs telling automobiles to share the road with bikes?! (To my knowledge, there are none).
This is a public safety issue... As the city keeps growing and developing, we need to make sure that bicyclists are safe and respected on the road. We need to put up signs letting everyone know to "share the road".
