Winter Guide

As we celebrate the winter holiday season, please note the following updates to City of Royal Oak services.

Recycling and trash collection will have a one-day delay for Thursday and Friday curbside pickup following Christmas Day (Dec. 25) and New Year’s Day (Jan. 1). There is no delay for Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) or New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31). Yard waste collection has ended for 2025 and will resume in April.

Downtown Royal Oak will offer free on-street and surface lot parking on Dec. 24–25 and Dec. 31–Jan. 1. Parking structures will be free after 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) and free all day on Christmas Day (Dec. 25) and New Year’s Day (Jan. 1). Normal parking rates will apply on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31).

City facilities will be closed on Dec. 24–25 and Dec. 31–Jan. 1.

Explore 50+ stunning ice sculptures on display in Centennial Commons and throughout downtown. It’s the grand finale weekend of Royal Oak Holidays—cold temps, hot cocoa energy, and peak photo-op season.

Chanukah Village Walk & Ice Menorah Lighting (NEW DATE) | December 21

Ice Menorah Lighting: 5:00 PM

The Chanukah celebration features the Village Walk, donuts, hot cocoa, latkes, fire show, Chanukah train, music, and the always-popular Gelt Drop.

Salter Center Gym Floor Resurfacing

The Salter Center gym floor will be resurfaced next week. This work will temporarily affect a small number of drop-in gym programs, including pickleball, bounce volleyball, and Let’s Walk.

All rostered programs are not impacted.

Programs will run normally on December 22 and 23. The Salter Center will then close to the public beginning December 24 for holiday closures and the gym floor resurfacing project. The center will reopen on Monday, January 5, 2026.

Open Lap Swim

Royal Oak Parks & Recreation, in collaboration with the YMCA, is offering Open Lap Swim on Monday evenings from 6:30–8:30 p.m., beginning January 5, 2026, at Royal Oak High School (1500 Lexington Blvd.).

Who can swim & cost:

Ages 5–59: $7
Ages 60+: $5
Children 4 & under: Free
ROSD Senior Gold Card holders: Free

Good to know:

No swim on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026
Four dedicated lap lanes
Children 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult
Punch cards available through the South Oakland YMCA (248-547-0030)

Yard waste collection has officially ended.

Here are your options for any remaining leaves:

Hold onto your leaves/yard waste until collection resumes April 6, 2026
Take a limited number of bags to SOCRRA between Dec. 22, 2025 – Mar. 30, 2026
Or simply leave the remaining leaves in your yard until spring — it’s actually great for soil and pollinators
