Mosquito Protection Reminder

Public Health Oakland Urges Mosquito Protection

A mosquito sample collected at Tenhave Woods/Quickstad Park on Aug. 12 has tested positive for West Nile Virus.

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a seasonal epidemic that can infect humans, birds, and other mammals. It is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.

While most people infected with WNV do not show symptoms, about 1 in 150 people may become ill.

Prevention of mosquito bites is the best way to stay safe:

  • Use EPA-registered insect repellent
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.
  • Limit outdoor activity between dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Be especially careful between August and autumn.

Royal Oak Civic Foundation

Royal Oak Civic Foundation Funds Community Projects

At its Aug. 21 fundraiser, the Royal Oak Civic Foundation awarded four $2,000 grants to city agencies: the Public Library, Animal Shelter, Commission for the Arts, and the Orson Starr House.

Projects include outdoor musical instruments with braille signage at the library, police microchip scanners to quickly reunite pets with owners, a commissioned artwork by a young local artist, and a fun run/tour celebrating the Orson Starr House’s 180th birthday.

Foundation Chair Tom McGannon announced the awards at Arts, Beats & Eats on 5th, which drew several hundred guests for a preview of the upcoming Labor Day weekend festival.

Love your street tree? Show it some H2O!

Newly planted right-of-way trees need our help—especially during hot, dry spells. Trees planted as part of the city's Tree Canopy Restoration Program need 5 gallons of water twice a week through October. Slow and steady wins the race (think trickling hose or soaker hose).

General guidelines for caring for right-of-way trees:

  • Water weekly for 2 summers
  • Mulch smart—never touch the trunk
  • No weed whips near the base
  • Remove support stakes after 1 year

Healthy trees = cooler, greener neighborhoods!
