Let's Celebrate Juneteenth Together

Royal Oak will celebrate Juneteenth with a family-friendly event at Centennial Commons on Monday, June 19, from 3-8 pm.

Juneteenth -- or Freedom Day -- dates back to June 19, 1865. It was when enslaved African Americans in Texas first learned that they were free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on Jan. 1, 1863, it took more than two years for the news to spread to Texas.

Whether you've known the history your entire life or just learned about Juneteenth, freedom is always worth celebrating -- so let's do it together!

The Royal Oak Juneteenth event will include family-friendly activities, music, games, performances, food trucks, vendors, horse rides, giveaways, and more.

Please mark your calendars and plan on joining us as we highlight the history of Emancipation in the United State.

NEW THIS YEAR: Freedom Strive March

Join us as we walk 1865 steps to celebrate freedom. Walk steps off at 4:00 pm on Monday, June 19.

Participants will walk through neighborhood near Centennial Commons in Downtown Royal Oak. Bring signs or make a sign at the event! We'll have supplies.

Dry Weather Fire Safety Tips

With dry weather expected to continue, we want to remind residents of the importance of fire safety in our community. We ask everyone to exercise caution to protect the safety and health of our residents and our Royal Oak firefighters.

* Do not dispose of cigarettes from moving vehicles or on the ground. Use an ashtray. Lit cigarettes can ignite dry grass or mulch.

* Do not park your vehicle on dry grass.

* If cooking outside, do not leave the barbeque unattended—place the grill on concrete or another noncombustible surface.

* Keep a fire extinguisher near outdoor cooking.

* Always practice your escape plan with the family.

REMINDER: The Royal Oak does NOT allow recreational burning. This is especially important to remember during dry conditions.

Master Plan Update

Thanks to everyone that participated in the Master Plan charrette. Videos of each workshop session and the Saturday’s final presentation can be found online.

In the final presentation, the city’s consultant (DPZ CoDesign) highlights the direction on how to proceed forward keeping in mind that refinements will continue throughout the process. Soon, there will be additional opportunities to further comment on these concepts and others as we head toward a draft version of a new Master Plan. Continue to follow the dedicated website.

Food Truck Rally at the Market

The food truck rally happens every month at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. Enjoy more than eight food trucks, face painting, balloon art, crafts table for the children, and local vendors selling their homemade items.

Residential Lock Boxes Available at the Fire Department

The Royal Oak Fire Department’s residential lockbox program is designed to get quick access to adults living in their own homes during medical emergencies -- especially senior citizens. When every second counts, the lockbox -- which contains a key to your home -- reduces the likelihood of property damage caused by first responders forcing entry into your home in response to an emergency call.
