The city's current Parks & Recreation Plan, last updated in 2017, is an important resource that Royal Oak’s elected and appointed officials and city administration use to strategically guide the development, maintenance, and programming of all 51 of the city’s parks.

2022 SEMCOG/MAC Pulse of the Region: Green Infrastructure

Have you taken this important SEMCOG, Southeast Michigan Council of Governments survey yet? Community feedback is important for future planning, and it will help guide regional strategies for implementing local projects within the green infrastructure network A 3 min video is available if applicable. SEMCOG and the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition (MAC), have launched a public survey to better understand perceptions of green infrastructure in Southeast Michigan. Input will be shared with SEMCOG’s regional partners to guide decision-making about implementation strategies within the region’s green infrastructure network.

MODERIZE 75 Update

Entering seasonal shutdown requires closing a portion of northbound I-75 in Oakland County this weekend.

Fast facts:

Northbound I-75 will be closed from I-696 to 14 Mile Road starting Saturday morning.

The posted detour will direct northbound traffic to northbound M-1 (Woodward Avenue).

Local traffic will be able to enter northbound I-75 at 14 Mile, Rochester, Big Beaver, and Crooks roads.

Weather permitting, northbound I-75 will be closed this weekend from I-696 to 14 Mile Road to allow crews to safely reopen all travel lanes on northbound I-75. After the weekend, northbound I-75 will have three lanes open from I-696 to 14 Mile Road, with the ramps at I-696, 11 Mile and 12 Mile roads reopening by Nov. 15.

The northbound freeway closure will begin at 5 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, and reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14. Northbound I-75 traffic will be detoured west on I-696 to northbound M-1 (Woodward Avenue), then eastbound Square Lake Road back to northbound I-75. Entrance ramps to northbound I-75 will remain open for local traffic from 14 Mile Road to Crooks Road/Corporate Drive.

Curbside Leaf Collection Continues

The large number of trees in Royal Oak make the fall leaf collection a major task. To make it happen, the city uses 13 dump trucks, two sweepers and a front-end loader with an attached clam bucket. Crews work long hours to cover the 212 miles of streets twice during the 6 week pick-up season.

Sustainability & Climate Action Plan Adopted

Royal Oak has adopted its first sustainability and climate action plan. The 2022 Royal Oak Sustainability and Climate Action Plan (S-CAP) is a three-year action strategy that outlines projects and programs to support the city’s sustainability and climate goals.

The plan represents the first formal sustainability planning effort for Royal Oak and includes environmental protection, economic prosperity, greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, and social accessibility, inclusion, and equity.

The new City Commission chamber offers an assistive listening solution that delivers clarity to those struggling to hear in a big room that can at times be crowded. The device (shown in the photo) is easy to use.

Residential Lock Boxes Available at the Fire Department

The Royal Oak Fire Department’s residential lockbox program is designed to get quick access to adults living in their own homes during medical emergencies -- especially senior citizens. When every second counts, the lockbox -- which contains a key to your home -- reduces the likelihood of property damage caused by first responders forcing entry into your home in response to an emergency call.
