Absentee ballot applications have been mailed to those who are on the permanent absentee list. Ballots were mailed to those voters who returned their completed application on September 29, 2022. If you aren't sure if you returned an application to us you can check online at https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/Voter/Index to see if a ballot has already been mailed to you.

You can return your ballot via mail, either drop box outside of city hall or at the city clerk's office. Your ballot must be returned to the clerk's office no later than 8pm on Election Day, Nov. 8.

Aging in Place Plan Public Comment Ends Monday, Oct 31 at 5:00 PM

The Senior Services | Aging in Place Task Force is sharing the draft aging in place plan for public comment through 5:00 PM, Monday Oct. 31.

Over 12,000 Royal Oak residents are over the age of 60, so it is important for our neighbors to have the opportunity to age in our community if they would like to. The task force has worked over the past few years to develop a plan to help seniors age in place, access programs and services and be active in the community. The plan identifies goals and action steps in six different domains: outdoor spaces and buildings; transportation; information and communication; housing; community engagement and inclusion; health and community support services.

The community can participate in a few different ways:

Online – You can find the plan online at romi.gov/agefriendly. There will also be a link available to share your comments on the plan with the task force.
In person at the library or senior center. Hard copies are available at the reference desk in the library and in the senior center lounge at the senior center. Residents can provide their comments in writing or online.

March, run, or walk a 2.2-mile course with 22 items or 22 pounds of non-perishable food or personal items for vets in need.

What is a Ruck March?
A ruck march involves walking at a fast clip with a weighted backpack. In the Armed Forces, participants carry at least 45 lbs. in their ruck, in addition to all their military gear.

For this event we ask participants to march/walk a 2.2-mile course while carrying 22 pounds or 22 food or personal items. Everything collected is donated to local organizations that help veterans in need.

Curbside Leaf Collection Begins

The large number of trees in Royal Oak make the fall leaf collection a major task. To make it happen, the city uses 13 dump trucks, two sweepers and a front-end loader with an attached clam bucket. Crews work long hours to cover the 212 miles of streets twice during the 6 week pick-up season.

Sustainability & Climate Action Plan Adopted

Royal Oak has adopted its first sustainability and climate action plan. The 2022 Royal Oak Sustainability and Climate Action Plan (S-CAP) is a three-year action strategy that outlines projects and programs to support the city’s sustainability and climate goals.

The plan represents the first formal sustainability planning effort for Royal Oak and includes environmental protection, economic prosperity, greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, and social accessibility, inclusion, and equity.

The new City Commission chamber offers an assistive listening solution that delivers clarity to those struggling to hear in a big room that can at times be crowded. The device (shown in the photo) is easy to use.

Residential Lock Boxes Available at the Fire Department

The Royal Oak Fire Department’s residential lockbox program is designed to get quick access to adults living in their own homes during medical emergencies -- especially senior citizens. When every second counts, the lockbox -- which contains a key to your home -- reduces the likelihood of property damage caused by first responders forcing entry into your home in response to an emergency call.
