Residents Academy

Do you ever wonder how your City government works?

Royal Oak is excited to host the Royal Oak Residents Academy for the first time!  This 7-week program will feature presentations, tours and demonstrations from departments including the city manager, city attorney, city clerk, police and fire, as well as budget, economic development, planning and community development, and the Department of Public Services.

The program will be on Thursday evenings from 6 pm to 7:30 pm, although some sessions may go to 8 pm to allow enough time for tours and ample time for questions. The program may fill up quickly and is space limited, so we will prioritize folks who can attend all sessions.

Tree Canopy

Tree Canopy Enhancement.

Congressman Andy Levin announced projects today that will address regional environmental issues that will impact 10 local community projects, including here in Royal Oak.

Royal Oak will be the recipient of $93,500 for tree canopy enhancement. This project is designed to:
* Help our city achieve the state’s goal of urban tree canopies meeting or exceeding 40 percent.
* An aerial report to establish an accurate baseline and a community-wide planting of 300 trees.
* This project will assist with pollution mitigation, stormwater absorption, and air cooling in the summer.
* Robust tree canopies assist with sequestering carbon in the air and reducing the heat island effect, which in turn reduces the need for air conditioning.

Library South Entrance Closes for  Construction

The Royal Oak Public Library’s south entrance closed Tuesday, February 22, 2022, for the construction of a canopy on the new library terrace overlooking Centennial Commons. Construction is anticipated to last for 3-4 weeks.

Please use the 11 Mile Rd entrance during this time.

The canopy consists of 14 steel ribbons mounted to steel pipe columns. The canopy when completed will be approximately 13-feet tall and will include floodlight fixtures.

Centennial Commons, Royal Oak's new downtown park, opened to the public in December 2021. In addition to the terrace canopy at the library, perennial gardens, a water feature, and a public restroom are currently in the works and should be completed this spring/summer.

Tree trimming

Tree Trimming Begins

The city began a trimming program in January for smaller right-of-way (ROW) trees in front of residences and businesses. ROW trees, sometimes referred to as 'city trees,' are located in the area between the sidewalk and the curb.

DPS will also be inspecting and identifying trees that could be dead/dying and noting large trees that need major trims to complete in the future.

This program will start in the southeast corner of the city and work its way north.

Tree trimming improves tree health by eliminating dead or dying branches. It also prevents further decay.  Often branches can become hazardous. Removing them can reduce the risk of personal or property damage.

Listen

Listen Up, Royal Oak!

The new City Commission chamber offers an assistive listening solution that delivers clarity to those struggling to hear in a big room that can at times be crowded. The device (shown in the photo) is easy to use.

If you are interested in trying one, please call the Human Resources Department at 248-246-3070 in advance of any meeting you are planning to attend. We’ll be happy to have a listening device ready and waiting for you!

Lockbox Picture

Residential Lock Boxes Available at the Fire Department

The Royal Oak Fire Department’s residential lockbox program is designed to get quick access to adults living in their own homes during medical emergencies -- especially senior citizens.  When every second counts, the lockbox -- which contains a key to your home -- reduces the likelihood of property damage caused by first responders forcing entry into your home in response to an emergency call.
