Veterans Day Ceremony is Nov. 11

Royal Oak’s Veterans Day Ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11 on Troy Street (between 11 Mile and Third Street).

Join us in honoring those who have served their country in uniform, pledged their lives to support and defend the Constitution, and vowed to protect all Americans.

The Royal Oak High School band and the St. Paul Lutheran School Choir will provide music. The guest speaker during the event is First Sergeant David Wandoff, 342nd MP Company.

Parking is available at City Hall, 203 S Troy Street.

New Refuse Carts on the Way!

The City of Royal Oak is pleased to introduce new 64-gallon wheeled refuse carts at no direct cost to property owners. (At 64-gallons, the carts are identical in size to our current recycling carts.)

While we know many people cannot wait for the new carts to arrive later this month, we also know that others are not interested.

If you’d like to opt out of receiving a cart before deliveries begin, please complete and submit this form.

But before you opt-out, we encourage you to first consider using the cart for several weeks. If you still don’t want it, contact the Department of Public Services at 248-246-3300 and we’ll pick it up.

Important note: the carts provided during the initial deployment are free – should you chose to opt out and later request a cart there will be a charge of approximately $50.

Back-In Parking on S Washington Avenue is Here

As part of Royal Oak’s new parking meter system, a small number of parking spaces located on S Washington Avenue and W Seventh Street will be designated as back-in angle parking.

Back-in angle parking uses the same process and motions as parallel parking but is much easier and safer. And the spaces are wider, too! It provides motorists with better vision of bicyclists, pedestrians, and other cars as they exit a parking space and enter the roadway. In addition, back-in angle parking allows safer access to trunk space and allows passengers to enter and exit a vehicle safely.

We have set up a space for you to practice in the west lot of the Royal Oak Farmers Market.

Of course, you don’t have to use the back-in angle parking spaces. The downtown decks are clean, spacious, and well lit. Best of all, your first two hours are always free whenever you park in one of the city’s four public parking structures. You may also prefer to park in a surface lot or in any number of traditional on-street parking spaces located throughout the downtown area.

Residential Lock Boxes Available at the Fire Department

The Royal Oak Fire Department’s residential lockbox program is designed to get quick access to adults living in their own homes during medical emergencies -- especially senior citizens. When every second counts, the lockbox -- which contains a key to your home -- reduces the likelihood of property damage caused by first responders forcing entry into your home in response to an emergency call.
