Business and Schools Informational Session

On March 18th, at 2 PM, Royal Oak Sustainability and our Food Reduction Pilot Partners will be hosting a free informational session for local food related businesses, schools, and organizations. This 2 hour session is geared towards, restaurants, caterers, food retailers, grocery stores, and cafeterias who are interested in reducing food waste and diverting food waste from landfills.

We are creating an educational cohort to learn various food waste reduction practices. We will also look at composting opportunties, food donation opportunities, and educational workshops to learn reduction tips and tricks.  At this informational session, we will determine how best to facilitate a pilot cohort. If your business, organization, or school is interested in participating in a collaborative and interactive pilot with others, we encourage you to attend to learn more and share your input.

There is no need to RSVP for this FREE Informational Session. Questions can be directed to

Food Reduction Pilot Initiatives

Starting on February 24th, Royal Oak Sustainability will offer free composting drop-offs at the Royal Oak Farmers Market from 8 AM until Noon on Saturdays. This is a three-month trial to gain insight and interest on how best to serve Royal Oak residents, businesses, and organizations.

In addition to the farmers market, Royal Oak Sustainability is partnering with several local businesses and organizations specializing in home composting, restaurant and commercial composting, food donation, and food waste reduction education. Our goal is to help you find the perfect solution for your needs while working on a more comprehensive strategy. CLICK HERE FOR COMPOSTING GUIDE.

A question we have been asked quite often is what can be placed in the curbside yard waste bag/bins. We reached out to SOCRRA and they only accept fruit and vegetable scraps due to a contractual relationship with a nearby neighborhood close to their facility. Items like egg shells, shredded paper, leftover food, etc., while compostable, cannot be placed in your yard waste bin. VIEW SOCRRA'S YARD WASTE GUIDE.

Food Donation

In addition to composting, we will be working with Metro Food Rescue on a food donation pilot to support caterers, schools, religious organizations, and anyone with larger-scale food donation needs. Organizations interested in this pilot should reach out to Food is collected and distributed to various local organizations tackling food insecurity and access in Southeast Michigan.
