Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle is one of the oldest comedy clubs in the country. Noted comedians such as Tim Allen and Dave Coulier began on open mike at Comedy Castle in 1979. Over the years, Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, Jim Carrey, Kevin James, Ellen DeGeneres, and many more notable comedians have graced the Comedy Castle stage. Mark Ridley is the creator of the 3 comedian format, the standard used in the comedy club industry to this day. Located in the heart of downtown Royal Oak, it is surrounded by a number of galleries, restaurants and other one-of-a-kind businesses that have come to typify this funky enclave. The theatre was originally built in the early 1940s as a single-screen theatre. As the face of Royal Oak changed, so did that of the Main Art, embracing an eclectic mix of sophistication and fun. Today, the theatre features the Detroit area's finest selection of independent film and foreign language cinema. Each summer, the theatre hosts a midnight series, having offered new classics like The City of Lost Children as well as hometown favorites such as Evil Dead 2. Stagecrafters brings exciting and fresh entertainment to Southeast Michigan! With affordable ticket prices, a 55-plus year history of quality productions and a great location in downtown Royal Oak, Stagecrafters has something for everyone. The Main Stage offers popular Broadway plays and musicals. 2nd Stage, a black-box studio theatre, presents contemporary and off-Broadway shows. Stagecrafters Youth Theatre presents two family-oriented shows per year. Stagecrafters makes their home at the Baldwin Theatre. Located at 415 S. Lafayette in downtown Royal Oak, the Baldwin Theatre is a beautifully-restored former vaudeville playhouse built in 1922.
